Summer has arrived, the weather is warmer, and the days are longer. We’re more likely to spend time outdoors with family and friends. Boost safety for everyone in your home and on your property this season. Here here are a few fire safety tips for summer.
Summertime Grill Safety
Backyard cookouts are a popular summertime activity. Invite friends and neighbors to enjoy time together, grill hamburgers, and lounge on the deck. When installing the grill, place it at least 15 feet from any structures, including the house, sheds, and outbuildings.
Before grilling out, check for overhanging branches. Never cook beneath an awning, under a patio umbrella, or on an enclosed porch.
If you experience a flare-up caused by grease or food particles on the grill, turn off the propane, wait for the flames to subside, and clean the grill to remove debris. Always keep a fire extinguisher on hand in case the fire gets out of control.
Fire Pit Safety this Summer
You can enjoy backyard activities well past dusk when you have a fire pit. A warm fire is inviting and makes for an enjoyable summer gathering spot. Before installing or building a fire pit, it’s helpful to understand safety.
Like your grill, don’t install a fire pit beneath overhanging branches, on an enclosed porch, or beneath an awning. Learn to stack the kindling and firewood so it can’t fall out of the pit and roll into the grass. Never build a fire on a windy day; pay attention to local burn bans.
When using the fire pit, always have an adult present to supervise children and pets. Curious children can play too close to the fire and endanger themselves. Teach the kids to keep at least ten feet away from the flames.
Safe Use of Paraffin Torches
Many homeowners enjoy using paraffin torches in the yard or tabletop versions on the deck. These torches burn a liquid fuel available at most hardware and home improvement stores. Some fuels have a scent additive to repel mosquitoes for a more enjoyable outdoor experience. You’ll find plenty of options for paraffin-fueled flames, including tiki torches and various tabletop and free-standing torch options.
When using yard torches, insert them securely into the ground. Verify the torch is stable before lighting the wick. Keep paraffin torches several feet away from buildings, patio furniture, and shrubs. Also, make sure to set the torches out of reach of children.
To extinguish a paraffin torch, use the metal cap included. For best results and to extend the life expectancy of the torches, store them in a place protected from the elements when not in use.
Anytime you enjoy fire this summer, have a fire extinguisher nearby, and make sure you’re familiar with how to use the device. Following the above tips will help ensure an enjoyable and accident-free season.
